Would you buy a new car that came with a warranty, or one that came with a supply of vinyl polish and a tool kit? You’d take the warranty, of course, because you buy the car to use it – not to spend time fixing and polishing it.

So why would you purchase website hosting that comes with just vinyl polish and a tool kit?

Visual designer, ready made templates, managed hosting, regular backups. Everything a website operator needs to do-it-yourself. Don’t get us wrong – many of the website hosts provide good development tools and secure, stable servers. Ourselves included. But unless your business is website development your time is already invested into other areas and you really should not be giving up that time from your area of expertise just to perform development and upkeep.

Granted you can save money by getting the “polish and tools” over contracting a developer. That makes sense starting out, but remember that every hour you are spending on your website is an hour away from practicing your vocation and generating revenue. After all, your website is not the one that generates income – you are. Your website should be assisting you in that, not taking you away from it.

So why would you purchase website hosting that comes with just vinyl polish and a tool kit?

Much of the website development and operating community has subscribed to a belief that you, the website operator, are the one who must take responsibility for your website. This belief has been perpetuated and fostered over the years, and is true – but only to a point.

You are indeed responsible for your website, but only because your website host is not. And they shouldn’t be. The potential work load that represents could put them out of business quickly if they were to assume it. A line had to be drawn somewhere. BUT there is a space in between the host and the operator that has not been filled like it could be – an intermediary service region between the web host and their customer.

After all, your website is not the one that generates income – you are. Your website should be assisting you in that, not taking you away from it.

It can be argued that the website programmer/developer serves as that intermediary service, and again true … to a point. An auto mechanic serves as an intermediary service between the car dealer and the owner – but an expensive service when it’s out of pocket for the owner, and overkill when the issue is a radio knob that somehow was lost, or a coffee spill stain on the dash that doesn’t polish out. That’s when the polish and tool kit become preferred.
